Domestic violence: her choice to be victim or survivor
I liked the way this author handled this subject by not only showing how the violence escalates, but also that Claire had her own reasons for staying rooted in her past. It was her choice to be with Brent, who offered her everything that her poverty stricken childhood deprived her of, so she could justify and rationalize the abuse. I liked having that insight as it often the question a domestic violence victim gets asked: 'Why did you stay?'
Then there was Greta's story. It added to the ominous feeling of the story. It was interesting to hear what she thought of the abuse. That was contrasted with Rebekah. She was a vibrant, regular woman, not part of Claire's social circle. In time, she became a potential lifeline and helped Claire to re-think her options.
For me, this was a peek into the abuse, the view of a victim, and the potential consequences. It was thought provoking, helped me to gain a level of understanding that I didn't previously have.
Then there was the romance that was starting with a guy who was the opposite of everything Claire thought that she wanted. Zeke, the mechanic,the regular guy, the one who made her stop and think that love might be worth more than the money. He was strong and hot enough to capture my attention. I really enjoyed how the romance had time to build before anything happened. Through Zeke, Claire had a chance to know how a man really treats a woman he cares about: with respect.
I recommend this because Claire has a choice to remain a victim or become a survivor, and her journey might help someone make her own choice. I was moved by this story and enjoyed it.

In all honesty I’ve never heard of A.J. Harmon. It was my accident that I found her name while browsing through the list of authors who were attending a book signing event. And while she was never on my radar then she certainly is now. Her emotional book – “A Choice for Claire” definitely caught my attention and now she is one of the authors that I’m most looking forward to meeting.
So a little about the book… The story revolves around Claire who was raised in a low-income household. Experiencing this disadvantage she always thought that money and stature was the precursor to happiness and therefore this became one of her goals. She eventually achieves this through her boyfriend Brent and while everything in their relationship was perfect at first she one day finds herself living ones worst nightmare.
When the abuse first started she was all too forgiving. She thought that it was a one time incident but as Brent’s job became more demanding she found those horrific events becoming more and more frequent. Afraid for her life she decides to run and find solace in her good friend Rebekah’s family…
“In you arms and inside you will always be home from now on. Promise me you’ll be my home.”
I felt immediately connected to the heroine, Claire. I think that the major reason I felt this way was because of her likable personality. She was beautiful in and out. She had the patience and the forgiveness of a saint. In the beginning, there were times that I questioned her judgement but in the end when she regained her courage and self-esteem she showed us that she did have it in her to fight.
Her counterpart Zeke was magnificent. He had no ties to Claire what so ever but that didn’t stop him from caring and protecting her. I admired how he was willing to risk himself to keep her safe. I loved that he was patient and considerate. He waited until she blossomed on her own. He took his time building her back up before even declaring his intentions.
I thought that their pairing was fantastic. Zeke was Claire’s bright light at the end of that dark tunnel. He (and his terrific family) was exactly what Claire needed in her life. Their passion and chemistry was outstanding.
I thought the story flow was perfect. For a book on the shorter side it was easy to get caught up in this story. I would have to say that it was the great characters that made it so.
“A Choice For Claire” is a beautiful story of hope, love and finding oneself. One that I would certainly recommend to romance readers looking for something on the emotional side.

AJ Harmon hits another home run with her latest novel. A Choice for Claire is a story about a girl who grew up during hard times who always wanted more. When a chance encounter with a young man and a whirlwind romance, she thought that she had found her Prince Charming. She's gotten everything she ever wanted, her fairytale life of sorts, but at what price? Sadly, she finds that the only happy endings she's going to experience are between the page of a book. She has regrets. She regrets not finishing college and getting her degree, she regrets not having a life that's of her own design. He new friend Rebekah introduces Claire to her friends and family. Her brother Zeke doesn't have a good opinion of Clair at first, but as her gets to know her and understand what she's gone though his thought and feelings for Claire make him not only want to defend her but to also protect her.
It was through a chance meeting at the gym, making a new friend and an invitation to join a book club that changed world and her outlook on life. Rebekah and her family showed her how good love, real love can truly be!
Have you ever read a book that you know in your heart of hearts that it's got such a powerful message not to mention that it's simply an amazing book, that you just know is going to make a difference in a persons life? Author AJ Harmon has written such a book!

I didn't know it at the time when I read and wrote my review for "A Choice for Claire" that THIS book was going to have a HUGE impact on a close friend of mine. I gave it to her on the weekend when she was at my house not too long ago. It was the turning point in her abusive relationship. That was the weekend that my friend started the steps to getting her life back!
