About the Author
Gary Heyward was born and raised in New York City’s Polo Ground Projects in Harlem. At the age of nineteen, he joined the United States Marines and became a decorated war veteran by serving in Desert Storm/Desert Shield Operation in 1990–1991. After receiving an honorable discharge he served as a New York City corrections officer, working ten years at Rikers Island. In May of 2006 Gary was arrested and convicted for selling drugs throughout the jail. During his incarceration he developed a passion for writing and penned his memoir, Corruption Officer. He was released in 2008 and currently works for the city of New York.

CHAPTER 1

THE G-SPOT

“HEAD CRACK!” the houseman yelled.

“Alright, nobody move!” he said, as he went around the table to collect the money from the bettors.

The game was C-low and at this time my man Fungler was at the top of his game again. It’s a Friday night, payday, and I have every dime in the bank (the bank is the guy who takes the money for bets) on Fungler. I gave him that name because that’s what he yells every time he shoots the dice. I’m his hype, motivating him when he shoots and antagonizing the other bettors around the table to bet against him. Whenever he’d win we both made money. Lately Fungler was on a roll.

Fungler and I would be on our bullshit as usual. When Fungler would get the dice he’d shuffle them, then shake them in his hand. I’d be beside him screaming, “Thrilla in the manila dilla!” He’d shake his head indicating “no.” Then I’d scream, “Feva in the Funkhouse!” He’d shake his head again indicating “no.” Then I’d scream, “Rumble in the Jungle.” Then Fungler would say, “Rumble in the jungle without the fungle kungle,” while simultaneously releasing the dice and watching them register. Every time we did this routine, we’d hear the houseman yell, “HEAD CRACK!”

People who had bet against him would put their heads down or have the shit-face (upset facial expressions). Then a cheerleader from the side would yell, “Double or nothing, I bet he can’t do it again!” A cheerleader is a person on the sidelines with no money, talking shit about somebody else’s money! Fungler gets the dice, but before we go into our routine, in walks Chuck.

Chuck’s money is long. He has a lot of it. Every time Chuck comes in, muthafuckas who are scared, and have the bank with a lot of money in it, normally pass it to the next bettor. They don’t want to take a chance of losing it all in one shot. Everybody knows Chuck will stop up your bank—putting a large amount of money down on a bet equal to or more than what you have.

Everybody knows the routine, but not Fungler. Fungler’s eyes lit up. He hollered at Chuck, “Get down, nigga. I know you ain’t come here to sightsee!” Fungler looked at me with a shit-eatin’ grin like, “I got this nigga!” I looked at him like, “Muthafucka, just pass the bank!” Then somebody on the side said, “Look at this STD (scared-to-death) ass nigga!” and everybody laughed.

Yes, scared ass nigga, a person who tries to gamble with the big dawgs but really has a low-paying security job, and has no business being at the gambling spot in Harlem, or anywhere else for that matter, ’cause he knows that he is living PTP (paycheck to paycheck). If he loses his money this payday Friday night, he will be like Sidney Poitier in A Raisin in the Sun when Willie runs off with all that money.

“Willie, don’t do it, Willie, not with that money, Willie!”

Yes, scared nigga. That would be me! Gary, Gee, Big Hey. It all depends on who is calling me. My momma calls me “Boy” or “Nutmo,” aka scared nigga!

So Chuck dropped his stack. And Fungler started talking shit, saying, “After this roll all you working niggas are going to be sick! You’re gonna throw up on your way to the ATM! I love taking a nine-to-five nigga’s money, but taking a hustler’s money is like winning ten thousand dollars on one of those scratch tickets. What is that?” Fungler asked the crowd.

“FREE MONEY!” everybody replied.

Everybody except me. I was busy trying to get this nigga’s attention to pass that muthafuckin’ bank! Fungler continued to shake the dice, ridiculing Chuck.

“Taking a hustler’s money is like going to Rent-A-Center, getting a whole bunch of shit delivered to your apartment, then moving to Brooklyn!”

Again, everybody laughed, except me. I was still in scared nigga mode!

“Getting his money is like going up in a bitch raw dog and not worrying about kids ’cause she got her tubes tied!” Fungler continued, and said, “What’s that?”

“FREE MONEY!!” They all laughed.

I’m over here figuratively sharting on myself, like when you think you have to fart but mistakenly shit on yourself instead. Chuck screamed out, “Nigga, would you stop walking the cat walk and just roll the muthafuckin’ dice!” Fungler shook them, then looked at me. Man, listen, the look I gave him was not a confident one. I did not even play with this nigga.

“Fungle in the rumble jungle kungle without the ungle dungle sungle?” I screamed out. Whatever the fuck that meant.

Fungler threw the dice. It seemed like it took an eternity as they flew past my face. At that moment all I could think about was my kids asking me for Michael Jordan sneakers, my past-due rent. Mom Dukes ain’t taking no shorts on rent. If I lose, how am I going to get to work next week? Willie, don’t do it!

The dice hit the wall and registered one-one-six! Fungler screamed, “HEAD CRACK!” I momentarily blacked out, then came back screaming, “NIIII-ZZIIIII-GAA!” After the house collected the money, totaling about sixty-six hundred dollars, I went over to Fungler and copped out, saying, “Yo, man, I gotta go.” So Fungler passed the bank. We split the dough. I tore the door off its hinges getting the fuck out of there.

Not a Pity-Party - Just the Real Deal

This is a very accurate book in terms of the daily-workings of large inner-city jails. I have a few close friends who are Riker's Island CO's, and the stories they tell me over the years are identical to those depicted by Heyward. This book is not "dumbed-down" as described by another review - rather, it's written in the dialect of many CO's and inmates. I also don't understand how anyone can be "confused" by the writing. Fine literature it is not; rather, it is a simply written story of one man's life/story. In addition to the casual reader, I recommend this book for those considering or entering corrections. Having visited clients on Riker's Island, I can personally attest that the "Island" is a world of its own. Heyward takes you directly into that world.

Gary Heyward's CORRUPTION OFFICER reminds us when faced with a choice to choose wisely

When it comes to looking at life and our choices and what can be the consequences of our actions, I think Gary Heyward's book CORRUPTION OFFICER is a great reminder for us all.

It takes us not just into the life and decisions he made, but what happened when the truth of his life was revealed and the abuse of authority that he had been entrusted became known. Gary takes us not just into his life as an officer trying to do his job but also the Gary that was looking after himself.

He talks about the way he treated those who loved him, the way he treated inmates and even the way he treated fellow officers. This is a book that lets us know that no matter who we are, what we wear or what title we have at the end of the day we are all accountable for our actions, and one day we will have to give account to what we have done.

When tables turn on Gary he better understands the importance of doing what is right. Now he can use his story to let others know the pitfalls of making bad choices and not allowing greed to blind us to doing what is right.

Definitely a book that speaks to the heart of everyone faced with good versus bad, Gary Heyward invites us to learn from his life and choose wisely.

A painfully honest memoir *

Corruption Officer is an excellent read of such a compelling tale. I read this book in 1 day, couldn't put the book down. Author Gary L. Heyward showed that anyone can make a mistake. He gives you insight into what happens behind the scenes in prison whereas in some situtations we would never even imagine. I recommend this book to all, but specifically to those needing encouragement on how to perservere through it all and rebuild a life after trying times.

This should have been an exciting story but...the overabundance of description about places and people and food and et cetera just sort of bogged everything down. I found myself skimming through to get to the end. Which turned out not to be an end at all. Oh, well. It's not worth my time to read the next one. Too much detail.

The sequel to other Away3D books

There are plenty of good books to introduce you to Away3D. This book - Away 3D Cookbook - is not one of them. It's more like the sequel to those books. There is certainly some overlap but this will cover topics in a great deal more depth than what you'll get out of a good introductory book.

You can tell this is going to be an advanced book right off the bat the book starts chapter 1 with Working with Away3D Materials. Any other book would start out with how to set up your programming environment to handle working with Away3D. This cookbook assumes you already have that covered and are ready to get on to some meaty topics.

On the downside some - not all - of the examples can get a bit involved. Nothing too verbose but some of the examples take a few pages of code. Fortunately all of the code samples are available online.

If you have been playing around with Away3D for a while and want to know how much more there is to know then I'd suggest skimming through the table-of-contents of this book.

I'm really hoping that this book will be re-released to cover Away3D 4.0 as soon as it's out of beta. That would make the perfect companion for experienced Away3D developers to jump up to the new version.

Michael Ivanov is a professional Flash developers, he worked in the field of game development for 5 more than 5 years.

His guide covers any possible thing doable with the version 3.6 of Away3D in 80 practical recipes. Notice that this book can be very useful even to people that are mostly interested to Molehill (Away3D 4.0) since there are many other tutorials as Physics, Rigging and Textures, the last chapter even covers "Broomstick". Practice tests are a mess - 3 errors in one section

Something catastrophic must have happened to the quality-inspection team at McGraw-Hill, because this book has been published with an alarming number of errors. We just finished part (not even all) of the first HSPT practice test, and ran into absolute gibberish on three math problems, as follows:

1. On problem 70, test-takers are told to examine figures (a), (b) and (c). What appears below are three figures labeled (a), (b) and (a). That would be a forgivable proof-reading lapse if it weren't for the fact that ....

2. On problem 102, a fraction is presented with one denominator in the problem -- and an entirely different denominator in the answer set. There are no multiple choice answers that work for the initial version. You can't solve the problem unless you can deduce that a key fraction has been entered incorrectly.

3. On problem 112, none of the provided answers will solve the problem. Turn to the answer section to see what's up, and one of the letter choices is deemed correct, with an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT VALUE provided for that choice. This isn't a test of math skills; it's a test of psychic powers.

We bought this book because it was slightly cheaper than the Princeton Review or Kaplan alternatives, and I foolishly assumed that all three providers deliver roughly the same caliber of work. My advice: pay a little extra for a different guide. Good test-prep books should reduce students' stress levels and help them prepare confidently. This book fails badly on both counts.

Very helpful

I bought this book for my daughter to help her prepare for the high school entrance exam. She did not read the book from cover to cover. However, the information was very helpful. The content allowed her to understand how each section of the test would be presented and the time limits associated with each. After the test, she expressed her appreciation for having the opportunity to review the book. It provided her a better understanding of what to expect for each section of the exam.

Too many proof reading errors - I do not recommend this book.

I am a math tutor and have been using this book to prepare two students for the Catholic High School Placement Test. Their parents purchased this book. The book has numerous proof reading errors in the Quantitative sections of the practice tests. The typical error is when the student is shown three figures, a, b, and c and asked to compare them. The proof reading error is where the figure C should be, there is an exact duplicate of figure A.
I can forgive this happening once in a book, but when it happens multiple times in a specific practice test, the publishers have failed to produce a reliable book. I recommend that Amazon discontinue offering this book.

Great, Great Book!

I absolutely LOVE this book. Chris writes in a way that makes it feel like we are walking through the book together. It's very engaging and vulnerable. This coupled with great insight has inspired me to pursue some specific things I've been putting off in my life... And he offers great tools and tips on how to move forward. I'm not only motivated, but I'm making a change that is doable and exciting. I'm so thankful I found this book! I'd definitely recommend this to anyone!

This book had me at "Welcome!" One never gets too old to dream, but often we forget how to travel from the beginning to the next step. This simply written step by step journey begins with opening this book and begin dreaming. It may be your first dream or your 150th dream. No matter, one step at a time you can achieve your goals. Gr 6 Up—Educators and art-loving parents would agree with this book's title, though kids themselves might feel differently. The rare child who voluntarily peruses this work would learn as much by visiting a good art museum. Basic facts about each movement, which include Romanesque, impressionism, surrealism, cubism, and pop art, are offered in very brief, mostly double-spread chapters containing excellent color reproductions of representative works. However, there isn't enough information here for report writers. Entries begin with helpful features, such as fact boxes containing salient information on when these movements began and ended and subjects and characteristics of the artwork. Also useful are time lines that include artists who flourished during each period and historical, literary, and artistic events that occurred concurrently. Occasional "Good to Know" sidebars provide additional facts. Pointless "Crafts Ideas" and "Quizzes" are haphazardly distributed throughout, as are suggestions for further reading that do not include full bibliographic information. Oddly, in a book targeted to children, c. ("circa") and AD are not defined. Finger also neglects to identify the word medieval as referring to the Middle Ages and uses it interchangeably with Romanesque. The otherwise informative captions accompanying the reproductions rarely indicate the countries in which the owning museums are located, and some typos and misspellings add to the flaws. This title might find an audience in larger public library collections or in schools with art history units, but where budgets are limited, pass on this one.—Carol Goldman, Queens Library, NY

Like the book, but needs improvements on visuals

My copy of this book literally just arrived, but I felt compelled to give a review even before reading the entire content because of an issue it has with the illustrations.

The quality of the illustrations in this book is somewhat frustrating. Specifically, the frontispiece, Mucha's "Reverie", della Francesca's Montefeltro and Sforza portraits, a portrait by David, a bust of Benjamin Franklin by Houdon and Klimt's "Portrait of Emilie Floge" are either blurred, pixellated, or have problems with color/contrast. I am an art teacher and rely on my books for visual examples, and I'll have to find substitutes in some cases, since the image is so far off the mark. (Some images feature colors that are simply untrue to the original and really distracting.) When it comes to art books, details and subtleties in the illustrations really matter! The publisher seems to have been in a rush to get this out and did not work out the imperfections.

I hope they fix what would otherwise be a really nice book.

Revolution in small package

As one reviewer mentioned, this book is short. It is dense in places, and required a second read of parts of chapter 2.
It's interesting how important turning points in life can be traced back to seemingly inconsequential encounters. I dated a girl just once, and we never saw each other again. While we were discussing self-help books that had been important to us, she mentioned The Invisible Partners. Later I ordered the book from Amazon and it proved to be revolutionary. Finally, I have answers. I understand why/how I'd experienced certain disorienting emotional phenomena since I was a young man. And now I have ways to "right myself". The answers and tools didn't come directly from the text, but indirectly from doing the work suggested in the appendix. (I think the appendix is worth the price of the book.)
If you're open to Jungian thought and have found therapy helpful but maybe unable to answer some key questions, do yourself a favor and read The Invisible Partners. You may not find it revolutionary, but I can't imagine you won't find it helpful.

good book, but too analytical

This book is good for introducing the concepts of anima and animus. But it lacks some good examples from real life. Instead it gets hung up on analytical details to the extent of being "anal." I recommend this book but it does not make it into my favorite collection.

Jungian Anima and Animus

This book primarily addresses the Jungian concept of the contra-sexual in which men have a feminine archetype (called the anima) in their psyches, and women have a corresponding masculine archetype (called the animus) in their psyches. These unconscious forces have profound effects upon our lives, especially upon our relationships with persons of the opposite sex. This short book, while written some time ago, is still applicable today. It covers a lot of ground in a short space so it can be a bit difficult or even dense in places, especially if the reader is not intimate with Jungian psychology. Nevertheless, the concepts (or model, if you will) are valuable and useful in everyday life-not just with romantic relationships, but also with interpersonal communications and understanding.

In order to get the most out of this book, it is necessary to keep an open mind. This can be challenging; as stated on page 9: "Even the most elemental knowledge of oneself is something that most people resist with the greatest determination. Usually it is only when we are in a state of great pain or confusion, and only self-knowledge offers a way out, that we are willing to risk our cherished ideas of what we are like in a confrontation with the truth, and even then many people prefer to live a meaningless life rather than to go through the often disagreeable process of coming to know themselves."

Thus, recognition of animus/anima interplay can result in "being in love" which we resist analyzing and bringing into the everyday world. From pages 18-19: "Relationship founded exclusively on the being-in-love state can never last...being in love is a matter for the gods, not for human beings...it can endure only in a fantasy world where the relationship is not tested in the everyday stress of real life...To the extent that a relationship is founded on projection, the element of human love is lacking. To be in love with someone we do not know as a person, but are attracted to because they reflect back to us the image of the god or goddess in our soul, is in a sense, to be in love with oneself not with the other person...Real love begins only when one person comes to know another for who he or she really is as a human being, and begins to like and care for that human being."

Projection is not, however, a totally negative process because per page 20: "Each time projection occurs there is another opportunity for us to know our inner Invisible Partners, and that is a way of knowing our own souls." Thus, for example, on pages 53-4: "In learning to relate to a woman, a man also has to come to terms with the little boy in himself...We have no free choice unless we are psychologically conscious persons," and on page 55: "Of the choices every man and woman makes of his or her partner in life; in some way the partner represents something we need to understand about ourselves."

But it's not a bowl of roses either because per page. 83: "Projections can never be withdrawn completely, for they are out of our conscious control; nor can we ever become so conscious of the inner images of the anima and animus that projections do not occur. Withdrawing projections does not mean that they no longer occur, but that we understand them as images within ourselves when they do." But, (page 124) "We get well in direct proportion to the energy we put into our psychological development."
