A psychologically complex man and a biography that does not do justice to the complexity

Who exactly was Otto Hahn? Hahn is one of the more difficult 20th century scientists to understand and Klauss Hoffmann's book is an attempt to interpret Hahn's life. On the one hand, Hahn played a significant role with the creation and in some ways deployment of poison gas in World War I. He stayed in Germany during the Nazi years, and, though he appears not to have actively collaborated to the extent that someone like Heisenberg did, he also did not do anything notable to bring to light the horrors of that regime. He has been excoriated for something he had no control over - winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering fission. He has wrongly been blamed for opening the door to the atomic bomb and many think his Nobel Prize partially belonged to Lise Meitner. The award was not his doing but he also never argued that Meitner (or his colleague and co-publisher Fritz Strassmann) deserved a portion of it. On the other hand, Hahn was universally agreed to be one of the most generous and collegial of men. Meitner herself was a close friend and colleague for life and, though she sometimes argued that she deserved a portion of the Nobel, more often she praised Hahn for his work and said he fully deserved all the awards he achieved. Hahn was excellent at mediating conflicts and after the war became a symbol of scientific progress in post-war Germany. He was an ardent voice for nuclear sanity after the war.
This biography of Hahn does an adequate job of laying out Hahn's life. I have three problems with the book. The first is that it emphasizes the positives too heavily. It does a fine job of laying out Hahn's accomplishments but rarely does justice to what might be genuine weaknesses. A book with the word "responsibility" in the title should be a better rounded account of the facts about Hahn's life that a reader might judge negative. The author gives many examples of Hahn's verbal hatred of cruelty and injustice but it would seem that his actions did not always follow his words. Hoffmann frequently quotes Hahn's honest and open admissions about his work in both wars and his sense of guilt afterward. But it is difficult to interpret those later writings. In any case, the book could be better balanced, especially to a reader unfamiliar with Hahn's life. A biographer who does extensive research into a person ought to be able to give at least some psychological insight into Hahn's actions. There is little of that here.
Second, the last few chapters in the book turn a nicely laid out biography into something closer to a hagiography. The impression is that Hahn spent almost all his time in the post-war years arguing against nuclear weapons and for peace. Undoubtedly he did a great deal of that. Again the facts are clear. But Hoffmann spends several chapters primarily on this issue and it gets repetitive after a while. The impression, wrong or not, is that the author is deliberately trying to play up Hahn's positive character traits. Hahn's later life could be more fully explained. In fairness to the author, it is quite possible that the German audience for whom this book was originally written would have a much broader background on this material but for those unfamiliar with Hahn, the book presents a rather one-dimensional view of his later life.
Finally I had some trouble with the translation. The phrasing and syntax in English are sometimes awkward, especially with the locatiion of prepositional phrases. Also, though true to the original, it is off-putting throughout the book to have Hahn referred to as "Otto Hahn." The latter is not the translator's fault but the phrasing and sentence structure could definitely be smoother in several places.
The book has some real strengths. Divisions within chapters are clear and well-organized. The photos and reprints of documents are excellent and add a great deal to the text. The middle section dealing with Hahn's work in the late 1920's and into the 1930's is well done. Hoffmann argues that Hahn alone deserved the Nobel Prize because the chemistry prize was "for the discovery of the fission of heavy atomic nuclei." Hoffmann argues that the problem was with the narrow criteria of the Nobel committee, not with the actual award. This is an interesting point. But the problems the book has are not with things that Hahn could not control but with the events in which he actively participated. The book needs to be better written (or translated) and needs a more well-rounded approach to understanding this man. Its positive value lies in being the only book available that lays out in detail the life-long work of Otto Hahn.
