Weisbard focuses in particular on formats—constructed mainstreams designed to appeal to distinct populations—showing how taste became intertwined with class, race, gender, and region. A Major Reorientation for Academic Popular Music Studies

The most viable alternative telling of post-war pop music history I've seen yet. Weisbard's commitment to approaching the topic via radio formats rather than by genre is an important intervention. This is an academic book for sure, and the introduction might be tough to get through if readers aren't accustomed to argumentation in the humanities. However, once Weisbard moves on to the case studies, all of that tough theoretical work in the introduction pays off. I don't normally read academic books cover to cover, but this one was worth the effort.
