About the Author
JIMMY BLACKMON has served in various command and staff positions throughout the army in the two plus decades since he started out as a second lieutenant in army aviation. He has commanded soldiers at every level from platoon through brigade, including commanding soldiers in combat at the squadron and brigade level in the famed 101st Airborne Division. He has served two tours in the Balkans, two tours in Iraq and two tours in Afghanistan. He is married with four children, and lives in Virginia.

Was turned on to this book by a friend of mine who was in the ROTC at my college and knows the author. I could not put this book down after starting it! The book showcases what the Pale Horse helicopter unit goes through on a day to day basis when stationed in Afghanistan in 2009. Each mission they fly into is well told and very descriptive. I would highly recommend this book to anybody looking to get a better understanding of what our soldiers were going through when stationed in a forward command position.

Colonel Jimmy Blackmon provides a first-hand perspective of what the Army aviation war in Afghanistan was like. All Americans owe a huge debt of gratitude to the men and women who valiantly carried out missions in the rugged Hindu Kush. Colonel Blackmon's unassuming yet heart-felt account of the challenges they overcame is a can't-put-it-down page turner. Reading this book helps those of us who were not there begin to understand the physical and emotional toll endured by those who were.

Powerful! The gut-wrenching saga of the heroics of men and women caught in the fiercest fighting in Afghanistan. Much more than a list of events, it is the story of the inner workings of the brains, hearts and souls of Soldiers. Blackmon describes the "how and why" behind that magical force called unit cohesion which motivates Soldiers to sacrifice for each other and complete the mission.
