These are the days of little books, and when the author was asked to add one to their number, he accepted the invitation with the jaunty simplicity of an inexperienced hand, thinking that it could not give him much trouble to expand or otherwise modify the account given of early Britain in larger works; but closer acquaintance with them soon convinced him of the folly of such a plan - he had to study the subject for himself or leave it alone. In trying to do the former he probably read enough to have enabled him to write a larger work than this; but he would be ashamed to confess how long it has occupied him.

As a student of language, he is well aware that no severer judgment could be passed on his essay in writing history than that it should be found to be as bad as the etymologies made by historians are wont to be; but so essential is the study of Celtic names to the elucidation of the early history of Britain that the risk is thought worth incurring.

Dated but good

This book, the pinnacle of scholarship in its day, was thorough in its scholarship and asked the focal questions. More importantly, it answered them with as much research and open-mindedness as possible. When I read through the book, I did not find what I was looking for, but I had in my mind a better idea what I should be looking for - much more than when I read more current books by more modern scholars. Rhys gave me the approach I needed for the Arthurian stories in this book; its pertinence one hundred years later is evidence enough of its quality.

Read It and Read It Again

After spending the last few years writing sexy romances as Jennifer Fulton, Fulton aka Rose Beecham has triumphantly returned to penning mysteries. With the award-winning Grave Silence, she mixes facts, surrounding the activities of the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints (FLDS), with a riveting murder mystery and crafts a gripping story.

When we first meet Sheriff's Detective Jude Devine, a former FBI agent who has been transferred to a small Colorado town in the Four Corners area, she is unraveling the grisly murder of a young woman left decomposing in a desert wash. The clues to solving this crime take Devine and the reader on an unbelievable journey beyond anything we could have imagined. FLDS is a splinter group not recognized by the Mormon Church that among other things illegally practices polygamy. Beecham deftly weaves a second plot about life on an FLDS ranch into this story. We learn how autocracy and abuse rule the mostly underage girls married to the "master" of the cult, and how silence is used as a survival tool to avoid being punished for disobeying. As the book evolves, these two plots collide forcefully, taking the reader on a compelling adventure with Devine emerging as the silent hero.

After reading this book over eight months ago, this reviewer was haunted by the "facts" of Grave Silence. I wanted to know where the fiction ended, and the truth began. After hearing a talk by Beecham on how she compiled her research and gathered first-hand information about FLDS, I received my answers and was shocked. This is not a book where an author spews her views on religion disguised as a novel. FLDS is a cult that does not adhere to any tenets of any religion. Beecham has done a tremendous amount of in depth research to incorporate these facts into a fictional murder mystery, and the results are an amazing and fascinating book. The writing is tight and fluid. The path to the murder clues grows as the plot moves forward. Beecham strings her readers along cleverly, not releasing us until the final explosive ending.

After hearing Beecham speak about Grave Silence, I reread the book. If she had written a non-fiction account of this cult, I would not have believed the magnitude and far-reaching effects FLDS has on its victims, the young girls who are forced into this way of life by other adult family members. This fictional story, termed a "message mystery" by the author, cannot be ignored. It captures the reader and obliges us to look beyond our world. Beecham's telling helps us swallow the hard reality and reflect upon the importance of unmasking these groups. After reading Grave Silence, I suggest you take another glance. The implications of this novel are significant and cannot be overlooked.

(Beecham won a 2006 GCLS award in the mystery/thriller/adventure category for Grave Silence. In September 2006 Sleep of Reason, the second Jude Devine mystery, will be released.)

Rare Find in Lesbian Mysteries

It's rare to find a lesbian mystery that is better written and more compelling than most straight ones. Grave Silence exceeded every expectation I had. It's brilliantly researched, riveting to read, introduces a great new lesbian detective, and pulled me into a world so disturbing, I'm still thinking about it.

Rose Beecham combines a terrific crime drama with a blistering expose of a Mormon cult called the FLDS. I had never heard of these people until I read this book, so for educational reasons alone, Grave Silence is more important than most novels. It's also moving, memorable, powerful, funny, sexy, and the writing truly knocked my socks off.

Not only is Jude Devine a fascinating and hot hero, but there are some outstanding secondary characters - sensitive Deputy Tulley, the repulsive Naoma, and Adeline, the runaway "bride", just to name a few.

Beecham also runs several great sub-plots through the story. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens with Dr. Mercy Westmoreland, Chastity (please bring her back), Jude's missing brother, and the creepy white supremacists.

I normally don't get around to reviewing books, but I had to spread the word about this one. Grave Silence is exceptional. My hat's off to its author.

A welcome return by the author

It's good to see Rose Beecham back on the shelves. This is far better than her previous detective series (Amanda Valentine), and that's saying a lot.

This book is one of the rare books that I immediately begin re-reading as soon as I reach the end; it's that good.

Others have described the plot; I'll just add that not only do you learn more about a topic that you really wish weren't true (the plygs) but you have a helluva read.

All I can say to the author is "More!".

Excellent Display of Thoughtful Exegesis

Murray J. Harris is professor emeritus of New Testament exegesis and theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and formerly served as warden of Tyndale House at Cambridge University in England. Harris has a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, where he studied under F. F. Bruce, and is the author of numerous books, including, Jesus as God: The New Testament Use of Theos in Reference to Jesus, Slave of Christ: A New Testament Metaphor for Total Devotion to Christ, The Second Epistle to the Corinthians from the acclaimed New International Greek Testament Commentary series (NIGTC), Colossians and Philemon in the growing Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament series (EGGNT), and many more. Most recently, Harris has released his second contributing volume to the EGGNT series, a volume on the Fourth Gospel that certain to make its residence on the bookshelves of many.

The Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament series was birthed out of a desire to function as a type of middle-ground resource that seeks to narrow the gap between the text of the Greek New Testament (UBS5) and the available lexical and grammatical tool being used by pastors and teachers today. In this present volume, Harris has delivered a goldmine of exegetical wisdom and theological insight into one of the most important New Testament books. The book begins with a very brief introduction focused on authorship, purpose, audience, setting, and date, as well as an extremely helpful and necessary section of John’s style of Greek and the overall structure of the book. The introduction concludes with a short discussion surrounding the pros and cons of five recommended commentaries and additional resources. This section is useful for the detailed reader as these resources become imperative in further investigating the exegesis that follows. However, if you are looking for an up-to-date bibliography on the Fourth Gospel this is not going to be a helpful section. Still, the abbreviations section just prior to the introduction does provide a wealth of resources mentioned throughout the book that may be of use.

As the reader enters into the commentary of the gospel, Harris has skillfully utilized a similar format and layout as the other volumes in the EGGNT series. Some accommodations have been made given the nature of the gospels themselves, as opposed to that of epistles. For example, the reader is not going to find as much sentence diagraming in this volume as the others, and the layout centers primarily around the verse level as opposed to the clause level in the other volumes. Personally, I found this to be somewhat of a disappointment because of the helpfulness of the clause level interaction for the task of exegesis. But, then again, this is primarily helpful because the other volumes are structured around the epistolary genre and not gospel narrative. Nevertheless, I think the reader will find that the verse-by-verse discussion is executed extremely well, and Harris, as anticipated, is successful in guiding the reader through the gospel of John with a fine tooth comb. Finally, after each section of the text is thoroughly examined, Harris has provided the reader with a “For Further Study” section, as well as “Homiletical Suggestions” that aid the pastor or teacher in constructing a communicational roadmap based on the previous sections.

As each volume of the EGGNT series is released the bar of exegetical example is visibly raised. Murray J. Harris has demonstrated what it looks like to provide faithful text-centered exegesis, and to do so with communication to the people of God as the primary goal. Harris has provided the reader with a detailed analysis of the lexical and grammatical style and structure of the Fourth Gospel, and he has done so in a clear and understandable way. Not only is this the best volume in the EGGNT series, but this is likely the best resource available on the market for those looking to walk through the Greek text of the Fourth Gospel. If you are a pastor, teacher, or learned laymen this resource will prove itself invaluable to your library. If you are a professor and looking for a faithful guide to send home with your students, who else would you rather have by their side than Murray J. Harris? For these reasons and many, I couldn’t recommend this resource more!

Classic Murray on the Gospel of John. Must have for Greek Exegesis!

Writing the inaugural book on Colossians and Philemon for the Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament series, Murray J. Harris has recently written the next installment on John. This series has already made its mark as a standard Greek text commentary series for serious students of the Greek New Testament and Harris once again shows his ability and love for the text.

The commentary is solely based on the Greek of the New Testament primarily using the fifth edition of the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament. Harris divides John into pericopes by its Greek text, block diagrams and then exegetes phrase-by-phrase. A good grasp of New Testament Greek is required to benefit from this book as well as an ability to understand the grammatical abbreviations used in the book.

As a guide, the reader is presented with a number of helps in their own study of the Greek text. The purpose of the book is not to do all of the work for the reader, but, rather, to "provide all the necessary information for understanding the Greek text." Having a lot of the time consuming work done for you helps the reader to focus more on interpreting the information and developing the sermon. By breaking the book up into pericopes the reader already has a good idea as to how to lay out their sermons. There are suggested homoletical outlines (often giving more than one) as well as suggested further reading based on the subject matter of each verse or group of verses examined. When more than one suggestion is offered by commentators Harris presents them along with his reasons for which one seems to fit the text best.

What shines through in this volume is Harris' love for and deep knowledge of John's gospel. This was a labor of love for Harris and as such it is more than a mere academic and scholarly exercise. He is able to allow the simplicity of the Greek and John's divinely inspired message to shine through while pointing the reader to the depths of John's simple message, "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life through His name." (Jn. 20:31)

If you know some Greek...

This is an excellent guide for those working through the Greek text of John. One of my goals for the year has been to translate the gospel, hoping to sharpen my translation skills as I do so. In that regard, this book has been most useful, especially in trying to understand the Greek syntax. It allows me to learn without the crutch of an interlinear, and minimizes my use of an analytical lexicon..

I have found an intermediate Greek grammar to be a necessary companion due to my lack of knowledge (only two years of Greek instruction). I am using David Alan Black's "It's Still Greek to Me" because every grammatical term in Harris I don't understand I am finding in Black's index. Harris recommends a section of another of his books (a book I do not own) as a glossary of grammatical terms. Black serves the same purpose for me.

Harris demonstrates an excellent knowledge of current trends in Johannine scholarship with works as recent as 2011 cited.

The only criticism I have is a two-edged sword: Harris uses a LOT of abbreviations. The whole table of abbreviations runs 10 pages. Learning the abbreviations is almost like learning another language. However, if fewer abbreviations were used, the book would swell to an unmanageable size.

No consolidated bibliography is available. Bibliographical entries are grouped throughout the book into 46 separate bibliographies, one after each section. This is more of a strength than a weakness, as it allows you to see at a glance the bibliographic entries that pertain to a given passage, rather than having to wade through a lengthy bibliography.

This volume is part of a series, with five volumes currently available and fifteen yet to be published. I plan to acquire additional volumes based on the utility of this one.
