With the arrival of Spanish conquistadors Hernando de Soto in 1540 and later Captain Juan Pardo in 1566 the indigenous peoples of southeast North America were challenged to accept these Outsiders — or fight them. Eventually, the Cherokee, Catawba, Creek, Choctaw and Chickasaw chose to fight and it is their intrepid resistance to these Spanish invasions that forever changed the course of history for North America and the yet to be United States of America.
Tawodi and the Cherokee lived during this critical time when imperial Spain was intent on taking these Indian lands for their pleasure, just as Spaniards had already conquered the Caribbean Islands, Mexico and Peru. After all, this was El Siglo de Oro de Espa�a, The Golden Century of Spain, decades before England’s “Lost Colony” on Roanoke Island, North Carolina, and its Jamestowne settlement in Virginia and France’s soon to be colonies in Canada.

About the Author
As a career educator, teacher of world history and general anthropology at a small community college in western North Carolina, Larry Clark developed a special interest in the region’s history and prehistory. A limited, self-published edition of Indians of Burke County and Western North Carolina was printed as archaeologists began to excavate a large native village near his home. In addition, for more than a decade, he periodically wrote about Burke County’s past for a local newspaper, the News Herald, and eventually published with The History Press of Charleston a collection of these stories in "Burke County: Historic Tales from the Gateway to the Blue Ridge." As a side interest he also self-published a handbook on "Time Capsules: the Why, the How, the Where." More recently “our archaeologists” made an unexpected discovery at the Berry’s farm that began to rewrite the history of early colonial America -- Spanish artifacts were uncovered in the 16th century Indian village of Joara among the remains of several burned “cabins” once occupied by soldiers of Captain Juan Pardo. It was here in 1567 that they constructed Fort San Juan (and three more in the region) to claim this land for King Philip II and the Empire of Spain, thereby making these Spanish settlements the first inland European colony in North America and the first lost colony of North Carolina -- some twenty years before England’s “Lost Colony” arrived on Roanoke Island, North Carolina, and four decades before the English settled James Town, Virginia. Thereafter Clark became so fascinated with the idea of Spanish conquistadors marching across these lands that he first wrote "Of Eagles & Wolves," a play about Pardo’s expeditions into western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, and then published with McFarland & Company a book entitled "Spanish Attempts to Colonize Southeast North America: 1513 - 1587." This was followed with "La Florida: Imperial Spain Invades Indian Chiefdoms of North America," "The Last Conquistadors of Southeast North America" and an historical fiction novel, "Tawodi: Cherokee of the Blue Mountains confront Spanish Conquistadors." Today, Clark resides with wife Patricia in Irish Creek Valley along a creek that flows into the Berry site of Joara and Fort San Juan.

INTRODUCTION

IT SHOULDN’T BE THAT COMPLICATED

People spend their hard- earned money seeking the advice of relationship experts when they already know what they need to do to have a good marriage— or at least a better one. I was recently reminded of this fact when listening to the marriage vows that two young people said out loud to each other in front of their community of family and friends.

They said in turn:

I promise to always treat you with kindness and respect.
I promise to be faithful, honest, and fair.
I promise to listen carefully to what you are saying.
I promise to apologize when I am wrong and to repair any harm I have done.
I promise to cook and clean for you.
I promise to be your partner and best friend in the best and worst of times.
I promise to bring my best self into our relationship.
I promise to live these promises as a daily practice.

How do you think this couple came up with their shared promises? Did they plow through the countless self- help books and blogs about the “ how- tos” of a successful relationship? Did they consult the work of psychologists and marriage counselors and study the latest research on marital failure and success?

Of course not. They consulted their own hearts, their core values, their life experience, and the Golden Rule. By the time we’re old enough to choose a life partner, we’ve observed a number of marriages and have a pretty good idea about what makes things better and worse. We know it’s usually a good idea to treat the other person as we’d like to be treated. If this couple lives their promises as a daily practice (even with a large margin of error), their marriage will do very well, indeed. Need the experts say more?

OK, IT’S NOT THAT SIMPLE

With marriage having a 50 percent no-go rate, it’s obvious that people don’t follow their promises, or their best thinking, just like people don’t eat healthfully even when they know what’s good for them. Paradoxically, it’s in our most enduring and important relationships that we’re least likely to be our most mature and thoughtful selves.

Real life is messy and complicated. When we share a living space with another person, tie our finances together, negotiate sexuality and the countless decisions that daily life demands— well, of course things can go badly. Then there’s the baggage we bring from our first family, and all the unresolved issues of the past, to say nothing of all the stresses that pile up as we move along the life cycle. If we make or adopt a baby (never mind adding stepchildren to the picture), it’s more difficult still because nothing is harder on a marriage than the addition or subtraction of a family member. In fact, it amazes me that all marriages don’t fly apart by the baby’s first birthday.

THE FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT RESPONSE

The older I get, the more humble I am about marriage. When anxiety spirals high enough, and lasts long enough, even the most mature relationship may begin to look like a dysfunctional one. To paraphrase the novelist Mary Karr, a dysfunctional marriage is any marriage that has more than one person in it.

I always remind my readers that even the best marriages get stuck in too much distance, too much intensity, and too much pain. Our automatic tendency toward fight or flight is hardwired, and marriage is a lightning rod that absorbs anxiety and intensity from every source. In case you haven’t noticed, stress will always be with us.

Life is one thing after another, so it’s normal for married folks to yo-yo back and forth between conflict (fight response) and distance (flight response). And just because the universe hands you one gigantic stress, it doesn’t mean that it won’t hit you with others while you’re down. So your mother’s health is deteriorating, your dog dies, your son drops out of drug treatment, and your husband is laid off — all in the same year. Unless you are a saint or a highly evolved Zen Buddhist, intimacy with your partner may be the first thing to go,

ARE YOU MOTIVATED TO HAVE A BETTER MARRIAGE?

The rules ahead may look simple, but it is difficult to make a change and especially challenging to maintain it over time. With marriage, as with learning a language or establishing an exercise routine, nothing is more important than motivation.

To put the marriage rules into practice, you’ll need to have

goodwill and a genuine wish to create a better marriage.

an openness to focusing on your self (not self blame but rather the capacity to observe and change your own steps in a pattern that is bringing you pain).

a willingness to engage in bold acts of change.

a willingness to practice, practice, practice.

Anything worth doing requires practice, and having a good marriage does too.

One can practice choosing happiness over the need to be right or to always win the argument. One can practice playfulness, generosity, and openness. One can practice having both a strong voice and a light touch. One can practice calming things down and warming them up even when the other person is behaving badly. One can practice taking a firm position on things that matter— a position that is not negotiable under relationship pressures.

It helps to know the rules, which you might prefer to think of as pretty good ideas to consider. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of our own common sense. At other times imagination and uncommon sense are required to see an old problem from a new angle. So, take a look at these suggestions and see whether you might be inspired to try something new. It’s fine to start small. Small, positive changes have a way of morphing into more generous, expansive ones. Your relationship thanks you in advance.

Rule #1, This Is Recommended for Marital Wisdom and Good Reminders

The timing of the arrival of this book was somewhat uncanny, as it arrived the day after my wife and I had had our first fight in quite a long while (in the past, there have been rough spots). During that fight, uncharacteristically, my wife was really anger with me and lost her temper, screaming and yelling and cursing; that night, she even slept in another room. The next morning my instinct was (fitting of Ms. Lerner observation that we tend toward fight or flight) to be frosty, but I reminded myself that won't change a downward spiral effect; so I tried to be pleasant, but that probably just got me to neutral. Then, a few pages in to Marriage Rules, Lerner wrote (quoting a friend and colleague): "It's just when your partner is being the biggest jerk that you're called upon to be your best self." Now, my wife wasn't really being a jerk (I could understand why she was disappointed in me, even if she was over-reacting [from my vantage point]. But it helped me reset my emotional thermostat and got me excited about Ms. Lerner's new book.

The excitement wasn't because of any big breakthroughs, but because the book offers timeless reminders delivered in an engaging way and illustrated with good vignettes. For example, in Rule #43 in the "Fight Fair" section, she tells about a San Francisco-based couple that fought viciously over just about everything. They seemed to have no control over their attacks on each other -- until a distinguished British professor stayed as a house guest for months, sleeping in the bedroom right next to theirs. Over those months, they were courteous with each other and agreed it was among the best months of their marriage. The point: you have more control than you think.

Not every rule or vignette moved me (for example, her story about communication about sex in Rule #55 seemed a bit too obvious), but the general message in that section "Forget About Normal Sex" is spot on and relieves pressure that can only make things worse in the bedroom. So overall, well recommended, especially if you're looking for a book to keep by your bedside and read a rule or two or few at a time -- and then share the book with your partner.

Other books on marriage to consider: Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples, 20th Anniversary Edition (helpful for looking at the deep underlying patterns that cause disfunction) and The Couple's Survival Workbook: What You Can Do To Reconnect With Your Partner and Make Your Marriage Work (especially helpful if you're really struggling).

Like a good marriage: gentle and strong, flexible and unyielding

I have been married for nearly 34 years. I want to be married at least another 34. I believe marriage is the second greatest gift God has given us, and I want to extract all the joy and beauty available from this special present. I treasure my marriage above all earthly possessions and relationships. I think I know a few things about how to make a marriage work. And yet, do my wife and I descend into stupid, completely preventable, fights? Sure do. Maybe this old dog can learn a few new tricks.

All the other positive reviews here do not require me to write at length. This book is worth reading. Studying. Sharing. There is much in here that it took my wife and me years to figure out; I wish I had read it (and implemented it) 33 years ago. But marriage is a path, not a destination, and the gentle yet consistent advice in here, with a few simple sample responses, is so effective and so adroit that it is hard to imagine anyone reading this who could not enhance his or her marriage. If you want your relationship to be one of the rocks upon which the rest of your life stands, read and savor the advice Dr. Lerner has to offer.

As she says, you don't need all 106 rules. But if you can learn one new thing that re-directs a destructive behavior or salves an exasperating wound, this would be time and money well spent.

It Transcends Self-Help

My wife got this book and I picked it up, expecting to scan it briefly and then put it aside. Instead, I got hooked. The stories are easy to read, often witty as well as poignant, and not a word is wasted. Harriet Lerner doesn't give predictable "advice." Instead, she gets inside a couple's tired old patterns and comes up with something new to try--something simple, powerful, and often unexpected that may shift the "dance." Who knew that I would read--and even learn from--a self-help book? I'm here to say that I did and I'm proud!

Horror and hope against all odds

John has written a vivid history -- at times poignant but still with undercurrent of humor and hope. Reminds us how precious our freedoms are. He brings to life different eras and people that are so different and yet so like our present times. The more things change the more they stay the same -- in our digital age we must remember a lot of eternal truths about the Jewish people inhumanity and hope in spite of the odds.

The BEST dream book I have found!

This is the best dream dictionary I have found. I have about 25 books on dreams and this is the book I refer back to again and again when looking for a meaning that I am having trouble finding on my own. This book is different because Kevin deals with the spiritual side of dreaming instead of the simple literal side. As an example, instead of the color Blue meaning something like "You will have a loss in love" or something silly like this, the color blue in his book has a more spiritual side, and may mean the soul, higher spiritual calling, and the 5th (throat) chakra in the human body. I'm calling this up from memory here, so don't quote me exactly! Anyway, what I have found in my case is that his meanings more closely reflect my personal meanings when I am working with my dreams.

At this point, I rarely use any of the dream books anymore, but when I am really stumped, this is the book I turn to. This book was recommended to me by my Jungian dream analyst, and I have found both her book recommendations and her knowledge invaluable in my quest to know myself fully.

VERY GOOD SYMBOL INTERPRETATION BOOK AND MORE.....

I had no fewer than 4 books to refer to when I first began learning to read symbols in my dreams. This is the ONE that remains to be used even now, after years of reading/journaling my dreams. It is most helpful in that it includes "actions." It is very informative with colors, numbers, chakra inf., and it includes information on dreaming basics. Including information on why we recieve dreams that include death, sex, nightmares, other significant events. There is a page devoted to children and their dreams and nightmares. Particular symbols are very personal and this book provided me with a foundation to learn how to "determine" personal symbols. I believe that anyone using this book will find that they too will learn to use it in that way. During my dream interpretation work another book became useful because, animals are a large part of my life both in awake and dream time. The book I found that is SO helpful in understanding why certain animals come to us is: ANIMAL SPEAK by Ted Andrews. These two books are always by my bed. I refer to both when interpreting my dreams and synchronicities, I give both of these books 5 stars easily.

This book is just a reprint of a previous dream book by the same author - which I didn't realize until it arrived and in small print on the cover, this is stated. While no one dream book could possibly list every symbol, over several years I've got a list of 100 or so common symbols that are not found in this book. On the plus side, the Cayce approach to understanding dreams seems the foundation for this book. Useful, but limited.

Bewitchingly fantastic!

The book description says the book is the “Salem Witch Trials meets Mean Girls.” It’s one thing when friends or reviews describe a book as a mash-up, but when it’s in the book description itself, I get a little skeptical. But Mean Girls is a viciously funny movie (“Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by Regina George?”), and I’ve been intrigued by the Salem Witch trials for most of my life. It comes with the territory when growing up less than an hour away from Salem. I’ve visited Salem several times, and I’ve both been in and directed the play The Crucible. But it was the added info that author Adriana Mather is a direct descendant of someone involved in the witch trials that made the prospect of reading the book even more intriguing. Would she make the book be all the things—funny, biting, satirical, and spooky—implied in that mash-up?

Absolutely!

The story starts with Samantha Mather—a direct descendant (like the author) of Cotton Mather, a minister who supported the witch trials—moving from New York to Salem with her stepmother while her father is hospitalized in a coma. She moves into the old house where her father grew up, a place where strange, ghostly things start happening. In school the next day, her last name alone attracts negative attention among other students, particularly a collection of four girls and a boy known as the Descendants. Their family trees include ancestors who were accused, tried, and hanged as witches back in 1692. No wonder they don’t like Samantha.

She gets bullied, and as a teacher, I was slightly put off by how the school population (students and teachers) is somewhat complicit in the bullying. The school administration and her stepmother chalk it up to Sam’s somewhat troubled past. But this is fiction, and as the plot got more mysterious, spooky, gripping, and scathing, it bothered me less because there’s a really powerful and important message buried inside the intricate, twisty plot. But before I get to that message, I want to talk about the characters and plot.

Sam is a great narrator. She’s smart, snarky, and stubborn. She lacks some self-confidence because of all that’s happened to her, but she’s also got a strong sense of what’s right and wrong. As her situation at school gets worse, and she is ultimately accused of being responsible for some freaky and dangerous things happening at the town, all she wants to do is help everyone by solving the problem—a curse on the descendants (including herself) of those involved in the witch trials.

The supporting cast is also well-developed. I like that the Descendants have distinct voices and personalities, and Susannah—the first to reach out to Sam—was my favorite of that bunch. As in many YA books, there’s a kind of love triangle with Sam and two boys: sweet, noble neighbor Jaxon and proper, mysterious Elijah. I only loosely consider it a triangle, and it was never a distraction, but it was quite the contrary, as both relationships were different, unique, strong and necessary to the story.

There are at least two big mysteries, and it was fun watching them converge and diverge throughout the plot. The stakes are clearly raised through the book, and though I sniffed out the ultimate villain, that villain’s true motivations surprised me. I didn’t want to put the book down when I had to, particularly through the climactic confrontation.

What elevates this book toward best of 2016 status is the message. Sam is trying to stop a curse that has been repeating itself in Salem since the witch trials, but the unsubstantiated finger-pointing that occurred then has repeated far too many times in history. Whether it was the “Red Scare” of McCarthyism in the 1950s (the inspiration for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible) or the profiling of different ethnicities in many eras of history including the present, the hysteria is unnecessary. And it happens in high school also if one “popular” group of students socially banish others for no reason other than they’re different. Even without witchcraft, this happens, and hopefully well-written books like this can help point out why that’s dangerous while doing so with an enjoyable story too.

This book exceeded my expectations, especially after reading a few books that didn’t. Maybe my reading dry spell was a curse, finally broken by How to Hang a Witch and its FIVE STAR rating.

A Bewitching Tale for all Ages

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! After watching the trailer for this book I was instantly intrigued and had to purchase. I have Prime and happened to order in time and was able to select same day delivery. As soon as the book came, I couldn't wait to read it. I couldn't put it down and read the entire book in a day (Saturday evening into the early morning hours of Sunday).

This book has it all, a strong lead character, mystery, wit, humor, history, and romance. I love when I can place myself in a book as if I'm one of the characters, and in this book I definitely was able to do that with Sam on her journey to end a 300 year old curse in Salem. I'm a huge history buff especially the history of the witch trials and this book definitely did not disappoint. I've already passed the book to my sisters to read and can't wait to read it again!

A ghost, a witch, a curse. What more do you need?

Loved, loved, loved this book. I usually buy books in my native language and have a hard time finding english books that I enjoy, so finding one is always exciting. I preordered this book after seeing the video trailer and thought it looked interesting. I love the paranormal and have always been interested in the Salem witch trials. I fell in love with the characters, I was rooting for Sam and Elijah. I tried guessing the end like I do with any other mystery novel and I have to say that the book did a good job at keeping you guessing. I enjoyed that the author who herself has an ancestor involved in the witch trials used historical accurate information in the novel. I received this book the day it was released and as soon as I got home started reading, I stayed up until 4 am to finish it. Could not put it down. Recommended for sure!

In the summer when I go to bed/The sun still streaming overhead/My bed becomes so small and hot/With sheets and pillow in a knot,/And then I lie and try to see/The things Id really like to be. In each of the following verses, a boy imagines that he is a different animal, and that creature, as well as the narrators dog, appears gloriously realized in the accompanying full-page painting. The text is pleasant enough, but it is Begins inventive menagerie that lifts this book above the standard illustrated bedtime verse. As the boy muses about being a giraffe (Id do a tap dance in the street/with little bells upon my feet), the picture shows a smiling giraffe, clad in a striped waistcoat and a bow tie, tap dancing through a rainy city scene. Or maybe next a mountain goat/With shaggy whiskers at my throat shows that animal springing across a gorge, clothed in old-fashioned mountaineering garb and carrying the dog in a backpack. It's a rhyming book about a boy that lies in bed thinking of the things he would like to be. I would recommend this book to a younger audience as it is easy reading and there are more pictures than words. A book on poetry with excellent color illustrations, and would recommend it for the 2nd graders.

This is the best bedtime book I've read to my children.

This book was very intertaining. It kept all of my children:10yrs, 5yrs, 2 1/2yrs and 1 1/2, interested thoughout the entire story. It is a fun book to read before bed. The illustrations are wonderful.

About the Author

Yoshihito Isogawa is a LEGO luminary with 46 years of building experience. In addition to running Isogawa Studio, Inc., he regularly holds LEGO workshops, lectures at schools and science museums, and creates LEGO models for events and exhibitions. He is the author of the popular LEGO Technic Idea Book series (No Starch Press), as well as other Japanese-language LEGO titles.

were delighted with this book

My boys, 14 and 12, were delighted with this book. They can't wait to make some creations. I wish it would have come with a kit with all the parts they needed, or that it was listed so you could purchase them when you buy the book. The directions are good and I think they will do fine putting them together.

I think this book is better than his Simple Machines and Power Functions (Vol 1) ...

I think this book is better than his Simple Machines and Power Functions (Vol 1) books. Gets into some reasonably interesting (but still reasonably "simple") designs. As with Vol 1, you have to be rather visually/spatially oriented to reproduce his designs, since he just gives a few views of the designs--no stepwise building instructions. Second favorite of my 6 Lego-style books. Favorite is "The Unofficial Lego Technic Builder's Guide," which is essentially a detailed textbook on Lego Technic construction concepts.

With sets like EV3, NXT, and Technic, you’ll have ample opportunities to help your LEGO-loving child transition from simple kid sets to more complex robotic sets. And this is a good thing, especially if your child wants to be an engineering or scientist when they grow up. My son has thoroughly loved his advanced sets from LEGO Education, and he uses the parts every week. But even with all these Technic and robotic pieces at hand, a child can eventually run out of ideas for new things to build. What to do then?
